I just finished writing your piece for North Carolina Weekend. What a wonderful spot on the Carolina coast! Everything was exquisite... from the luxurious room to the delectable and decadent shrimp and grits. I wish you all the best and hope to come back again soon. Watch for your profile on May 7th at 9 PM and May 8th at 8 PM on UNC-TV.

When I first read "The Old Man and the Boy" and "The Old Man’s Boy Grows Older" several years ago, I was impressed with the quality of Robert Ruark’s heartwarming stories of boyhood adventures in and around Southport. I was also struck by just how important the Old Man’s house was to Ruark. So a few years ago, my wife and I traveled to Southport just to see the house that the world famous journalist and author had so fondly immortalized. We walked up to 119 N. Lord Street and took several photos, wondering what it was like inside. When we heard that it had recently opened as the Robert Ruark Inn, we jumped at the chance to spend a weekend. The famous magnolia tree is still there and seeing it from Ruark’s bedroom was a dream come true. A stay at the Robert Ruark Inn is a must for fans of the author. However, all visitors will enjoy the beautiful décor, the down-home, Southern breakfasts and the wonderful hospitality of the innkeeper, David Gale. Thank you to the fine folks at the Robert Ruark Inn for the great time my wife and I had and also for preserving and sharing an important legacy of America’s greatest outdoor writer.

I was in town working with the State Port Pilot newspaper and they highly recommended I stay at the Robert Ruark Inn to get a true feel for this area's history. The restoration of this beautiful old home is truly remarkable - every detail from era-specific antiques, wonderful old photos of famed author Robert Ruark in his African safari heyday, old binoculars, yet all the modern comforts - a flat screen tv cleverly tucked behind a wall cupboard above an easy "one-switch" fireplace! I was in heaven the entire week. And the breakfasts and evening snacks - the few extra pounds I gained were worth every delicious bite!! A must stay place while in Southport.

What can we say about such a wonderful experience. The home was beautiful. The walk to the waterfront so lovely. The food was fantastic. While it is true that you might find these things elsewhere, the innkeeper is unique to this setting. The genuine warmth of his spirit will restore your soul and leave a good feeling in your heart. That is something quite special in today,s world. We look forward to going back as soon as possible. May God continue to bless this wonderful home.

The Robert Ruark Inn is the newest GEM in historic Southport. Within easy walking distance to downtown Southport and the Cape Fear River, the Inn provides the visitor with history, charm, old-world elegance and comfort.

Our guest room, Virginia's Room, combined beautiful period decor with a great "state of the art" bathroom. The huge walk-in shower, with its many jets was envigorating.

David is a knowledgable and gracious host and a mean chef. Former owner of a local restaurant, his breakfast is delicious and hearty. Wine and cheese at 5, bedtime snacks and a full breakfast...it was all great!

We loved our stay and will be back. My goal is to try every room in the house.

What a wonderful job the builder, Cornerstone Building Company of Southport, NC, did in preserving the heritage of Southport, North Carolina and of the era the house was originally constructed in. It is truly the most beautiful house in Southport! During the tour some 1200 visitors were treated to a tour of the past, with the vintage antiques, original hardwoods, lancet windows and Southport bows throughout the home.I found out that Cornerstone Building Company has restored other historic homes on the tour this year!

We were pleased to be the first guest of the Inn at the beginning of January. This was our home away from home for several days while our Southport home underwent repairs from a ruptured water heater - which has now relocated from the third floor to the garage!

The Inn’s décor is wonderful. While this historic home has been totally remodeled, the furnishings give you a feeling of stepping back in time. The porches and patio provide a place to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of Southport.

The breakfast was to die for – and certainly more food than we needed for the whole day! David cooked up new fare each day and treated us to a sweet something upon our return in the afternoons. Please don’t book while you are on a diet - you will miss a real treat. David was most accommodating to our schedules and needs.

It is in a perfect location to enjoy walking to many restaurants, to the river, or to the park to swing and watch the boats and birds. For anyone visiting Southport this is the perfect place to enjoy our quiet historic town.
